SWANSEA VALLEY CANAL SOCIETY

We  are very  pleased  with  the  progress of  the  canal  dredging and I  hope  some  of  you have  been  able  to  watch  the  work  being  carried  out.

How  wonderful  to  see the  large  barges  travelling  along ,  a glimpse  into  the  past  value of  this  form of  transport  and how  the  industrial past  of  our  valley came  about.

A  progress  report on  the dredging  on  the 14th December 2019  stated 2,242 tonnes of  silt  had  been  removed along  836  metres length.

Every  canal needs  boats  to  preserve  its  great  heritage  and  to  remind  us  of  the reason  why  they  were  built.

Now  the  canal  is  deep  enough  we hope  to  have  a small trip  boat  working along the  dredged  section  opening  the  canal to more  visitors for  leisure  and  educational  purposes, adding  to the canoes already in the  summer  months.

We  the  society have  great  plans , if  anyone reading this has some  thoughts or  ideas for us we would  welcome them, and  if  anyone has  any  photos of past  times of  the  canal we  would  be  delighted to  see them.

The  society is  aware of the canal  stretching up to  Ynysmeudwy and the  beauty of  that area  too, we  help  with  the maintenance  of  that  area   and  travel  up  there  with  our  equipment  as  often  as  we  can.

We  are a  cheerful  bunch  and even  on  wettest , warmest , windiest days turn up  to  do  our  best I  think the  canal  has  that hold  on us ,if  you  want  to  join  us  come  along  any  Tuesday  at  Brownsters  Cafe  in Clydach  from  8am to  about  8 45am where we have  cup of  tea  or  breakfast before  setting off  to  work.
