Neath Train Station is staying on the mainline

By Jeremy Miles AM

I would like to reassure the residents of the Neath constituency that there are no government plans or proposals to downgrade Neath train station, despite claims that have been made in relation to the recent campaign.

Mark Barry, a Cardiff-based transport expert floated at the end of last year a plan for a Swansea Bay area metro linking up our area with an integrated train and bus service. I am sure we would all agree that this would be a positive development, if it were to happen.

At the same time he floated the idea of reducing journey times to Cardiff and London by straightening the mainline and taking Neath station off if.

I immediately issued a statement rejecting this as a terrible idea and at the same time spoke with colleagues in the Welsh Government to emphasise my response to this suggestion.

I have since made further representations to Welsh Government, I have met with the Cabinet Secretary and his officials and with Network Rail and it has been made clear several times that there is no proposal or intention to downgrade services in Neath, indeed quite the opposite, the plan is to enhance them.

Ken Skates (7/3/180 “Neath station shouldn’t just be protected but should be enhanced”

Carwyn Jones (22/5/18) “Neath is an exceptionally important station and there is no kind of threat to the services of Neath”.

Ken Skates (6/6/18) “regardless of who recommends what, Neath station is staying on the mainline. Moreover, Neath station won’t just be protected; Neath station will be enhanced”.

I have been opposed to this idea since it was originally floated by Prof Barry last year and although he is involved with giving advice to the government on the rail network, I would like to make it clear this is not a government plan or proposal and there is a big difference between ideas which are floated for discussion by academics and by individual politicians and an actual plan or proposal to take that step. That has never been the case.

Hoffwn roi sicrwydd I drigolion etholaeth Castell-nedd nad oes cynlluniau neu gynigion gan y llywodraeth I israddio gorsaf drenau Castell-nedd, er gwaethaf honiadau sydd wedi’u gwneud mewn perthynas â’r ymgyrch ddiweddar.

Awgrymodd Mark Barry, arbenigwr cludiant yng Nghaerdydd, ar ddiwedd y llynedd, gynllun ar gyfer metro ardal Bae Abertawe fyddai’n cysylltu ein hardal â gwasanaeth trên a bws integredig. Yr wyf yn siŵr y byddem I gyd yn cytuno y byddai hyn yn ddatblygiad cadarnhaol, pe bai’n digwydd.

Ar yr un pryd, fe wnaeth y syniad o leihau amseroedd teithiau I Gaerdydd a Llundain trwy sythu’r brif linell a chymryd gorsaf Castell-nedd I ffwrdd o’r brif linell.

Gwnes i ddatganiad ar unwaith yn gwrthod hyn fel syniad ofnadwy ac ar yr un pryd cysylltais gyda fy nghydweithwyr yn Llywodraeth Cymru i bwysleisio fy ymateb i’r awgrym hwn.

Yr wyf ers hynny wedi trafod ymhellach gyda Lywodraeth Cymru, rwyf wedi cyfarfod ag Ysgrifennydd y Cabinet a’i swyddogion a chyda Network Rail, ac mae bellach wedi’i wneud yn glir sawl gwaith nad oes cynnig neu fwriad i israddio gwasanaethau yng Nghastell-nedd, yn wir i’r gwrthwyneb , mai’r cynllun yw eu gwella.

Ken Skates (7/3/18) “Ni ddylai gorsaf Gastell-nedd gael ei ddiogelu yn unig ond dylid ei wella”

Carwyn Jones (22/5/18) “Mae Neath yn orsaf eithriadol o bwysig ac nid oes unrhyw fath o fygythiad i wasanaethau Castell-nedd”

Ken Skates (6/6/18) “waeth pwy sy’n argymell beth, mae gorsaf Gastell-nedd yn aros ar y brif linell. Ar ben hynny, ni fydd gorsaf Castell-nedd yn cael ei ddiogelu yn unig: bydd gorsaf Gastell-nedd yn cael ei wella”

Yr oeddwn wedi gwrthwynebu’r syniad hwn pan godwyd gan yr Athro Barry y llynedd, ac er ei fod yn ymwneud â rhoi cyngor i’r llywodraeth ar y rhwydwaith rheilffyrdd, hoffwn wneud yn glir nad cynllun neu gynnig y llywodraeth ydyw a mae yna wahaniaeth mawr rhwng syniadau sy’n cael eu codi er trafod gan academyddion a gwleidyddion unigol a cynllun gweithredol. Nid yw hynny erioed wedi bod yn wir
